Youth get democratic about mental health
We’ve all heard the startling figure that 1 in 4 young people in Australia suffer from a mental illness. But did you know that the majority of severe mental illness is diagnosed before 12 years of age? Youth mental health is a central tenant of the Government’s ten year roadmap. The Federal Government committed 1.5 billion dollars towards mental health in May’s budget – although one third came from rationalising existing programs. The majority of these funds will increase the number of Headspace Centres in regional Australia –which target preventative care for people aged 12 to 25.
