Young film-maker tells grandmother’s story
On the 17th of May 1942, over two hundred Aboriginal people were forcibly removed from the Cape Bedford Mission in North Queensland to the community of Woorabinda, 2000 kilometres away. They were taken because they were suspected of spying for Germany during World War 11. 7 years later, the Cape Bedford people were allowed to return home, to what is now known as “Hopevale” meaning “the valley of hope”. Tonight – the Dendy Theatre in Brisbane will relive this incredible story through the eyes of Hopevale resident Eileen Deemal. As Kerry Klimm reports – Eileen’s grandson Caden Pearson’s documentary “Homeland” is a finalist in Queensland’s New Filmakers Award.
