Yothu Yindi singer pushed for a world characterised by ‘mutual respect’

The former lead singer of Yothu Yindi is being remembered as a trail blazer who brought Aboriginal culture to the mainstream. Although most famous for his place in Australian music, he was also an intellectual and a teacher. On top of his knowledge in Yolngu culture, he also became the first Aboriginal person from Arnhem Land to get a university degree.

Mr Yunupingu had been struggling with end stage kidney disease, and died overnight at his home at Yirrkala in the Northern Territory.
