Yorta Yorta historical agreement
The Yorta Yorta peoples are this week celebrating the Victorian government’s official recognition of their connection with traditional country and water in north-central Victoria… An agreement is ready to be signed between the Yorta Yorta and state in early June, covering around 50 thousand hectares of land. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Dr Bill Jonas, has praised the deal as an excellent example that the relationship between government and traditional owners exists regardless of formal court processes. Speaking to Craig Egert, Yorta Yorta spokesman Henry Atkinson gave recognition to the Victorian government. And Katrina Schonnefeld asked the Victorian Chair of Australians for Native title and Reconciliation, Peter Lewis, what he thought the ramifications might be for the wider indigenous community in the state.
