A new radio service is being launched today to meet the needs of the Yolngu people of north east Arnhem land. Boradcast in the Yolngu language the service will provide information and adult education needs to the community as well as providing an outlet to maintain cultural traditions, especially for young people. The service was started by the Aboriginal Research and development Services in the Northern territory. The organisation has been working in Arnhem land for the past thirty years and have established the radio service through donations and grants. CEO Richard Trugeon says that previous trials of the radio service have had a positive impact on the communities. Broadcaster Harry Gulwana says that the radio service is also a good way to keep Yolngu traditions alive. Yolngu Radio is now broadcasting on 1530 AM in Nhulunbuy, Darwin and Palmerston.
