A 27-year-old mentally ill aboriginal man from Townsville in north Queensland has died after he stopped breathing while being restrained by police earlier this week. Faith Valencia spoke with Professor Gracelyn Smallwood, about how the lack of cultural protocols contributed to his death. Professor Smallwood is a family member, appointed spokesperson for the man’s family and is also the chairwoman of the Townsville Indigenous Human Rights Committee and a nurse.
