Leading CRISPR scientists from around the world have today called for a global moratorium on editing human genes.

The moratorium would pause the editing of sperm, eggs, and embryos until countries could agree on the best and most ethical way to move forward.

CRISPR research, including germline editing, as well as the editing of nonheritable cells to stamp out disease, would not be affected.
