World’s largest goldmine closed for three days

The Indonesian controlled region of West Papua saw three days of rioting that caused a temporary closure of the world’s biggest gold mine. Locals from the region of West Papua are demanding that Freeport, the company that owns the mine and exploits the resources of the land, consider them as equal shareholders. Although the riots have stopped, the indigenous people’s pledge to be recognized remains in place. The Wire spoke earlier today to Freeport’s Jakarta spokesperson Mindo Pangariduan and Denny Yomake, an activist from West Papua.
