Hundreds of people gathered in Sydney’s Hyde Park yesterday to commemorate World Refugee Day and rally against the Federal government’s policy of mandatory detention. Protestors planted a field of hearts and listened to a number of speakers, before marching around the city in protest against the government’s policy of mandatory detention. Christine Baker headed down with a microphone and spoke to some of the participants. Dr Zachary Steele, is a clinical psychologist at the University of NSW’s School of Psychology who is strongly opposed to the government’s policy, Najeeba Wazefadost, is a sixteen year old Afghan refugee, and Merlin Luck (Big Brother evictee), spokespeople from Bennelong Friends of Refugees, and other people at the rally.
