World Press Freedom Day
2003 has been described as a “black year” for journalism, with 42 reporters killed while carrying out their duties and another 120 imprisoned. The extreme dangers of journalism in some countries is being highlighted today in several studies as part of ” World Press Freedom Day”. The organisation “Reporters without borders” says last year was the worst year for journalist deaths in a decade. The Australian government was also criticised in the report for preventing journalists from properly covering the situation in some immigration detention centres. Many countries still place heavy restrictions on reporting and cut the flow of information to a trickle. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Director of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism, Associate Professor, Chris Nash, about the importance of media freedom, particularly in conflict zones.
