World AIDS Day – Making the world aware
For 21 years it has been known as the killer virus…silently and slowly killing many of the world’s population. It’s HIV/AIDS. More than two times the entire population of Australia are currently living with it globally and the rate of infection is increasing. Many countries, particularly in Africa, are experiencing epidemic levels of HIV. The world’s worst affected region, Sub Sahara Africa, is home to 12 per cent of the world’s population – but yet tragically, it makes up 64 per cent of the world’s HIV/AIDS infected people.Throughout the world, HIV/AIDS is being acknowledged today – it’s World AIDS Day. Dr Marcel van Soest, the executive director of the World AIDS Campaign, spoke about his global campaign and the day his organisation has established so the world can begin to recognize the important issue of HIV/AIDS. South African woman, Mpogeng Mahlangu tells of her experiences with HIV infected people and the situation in South Africa.
