Workplace deaths continue
Around the world today workers are celebrating May Day. Workplace accident figures however are no cause for celebration. Last week five people died in the workplace, and that was just in Victoria. Despite the media eye glued to Tasmania where one person died last week and two are awaiting rescue following an accident at the Beaconsifeld Gold mine, industrial accidents are often not talked about. One group that is talking about workplace deaths is the Industrial Deaths Support and Advocacy Group, a non for profit association whose members have lost a family member to a workplace accident and campaign to stop it happening again. In Victoria where the group is based their work resulted in a family support officer being employed by Work Safe. The Wire spoke to the group’s secretary Deanne May.
