Women leaders step up, but men still dominate government

Carmen Tebbut became NSW’s first female vice premier today. In the early 20th century, Australia led the world in giving women the right to vote, and by allowing them to stand for national parliament. Since then we’ve been on a downhill slide. Australia is now ranked 30th in the world for its percentage of female parliamentarians. Change has been slow, but successful politicians such as the Minister for the Status of Women Tanya Plibersec, says that her political career has been far easier than those of her predeccesors.
