Although Wollemi National Park is considered by many to be the largest remaining wilderness in New South Wales, it was believed that nothing of archaeological interest could be found there. But in 1996, bush walkers came across a rock art shelter with some extraordinary drawings. World heritage nomination for the park didn’t include cultural heritage, but on investigation this seems to be one of the park’s strongest features. In January 2001 the Australian Museum began community based research into Wollemi’s cultural heritage, especially rock-art. The project features a strong working partnership between archaeologists and Aboriginal people. Will Farrell spoke to Wayne Brennan, consultant archaeologist, about the signs of a continuing Aboriginal culture in the Blue Mountains, that raises some interesting Native Title issues.
