A German renewable energy group has today announced plans to build a two billion dollar wind farm in regional NSW. The proposal includes the installation of 500 wind turbines in an area north-west of Broken Hill – making it the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere. It’s expected the project could provide up to four and a half per cent of NSW’s energy needs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3 million tonnes a year. But there are concerns that investment in the project will be stalled because of the confusion surround state and federal incentive schemes.
