Human Rights activists have called on Julia Gillard to keep her promise on getting children out of Australia’s detention centres. Last year the government pledged to remove several hundred children and their families from detention into community housing by June of this year while their asylum claims were assessed. But earlier this month they announced plans to build three new detention centres, leading to suspicion that more young children will be incarcerated. The plight of children in detention will be discussed this evening at the University of Western Sydney with speakers from a variety of backgrounds.
