It’s not everyday you hear about the rights of everyday Australians being ignored by their governing authorities. According to about 10% of the population of Whyalla – a town five hours drive north-west of Adelaide – their right to breathe fresh air has been put on the backburner time and time again. The town streets are constantly covered in red dust produced from the neighbouring mining company One Steel, and ovetr the past month, dust emissions have violated national guidelines eight times. Mark Parnell, Greens Senator in the South Australian Parliament used to be an environmental lawyer fighting for the rights of residents in East Whyalla and he explains how serious the dust problem really is. Ted Kittel is a resident in East Whyalla and is the Chair spokesperson for the Whyalla Red Dust Action Group, and he explains what the town thinks of the mining company and what they’re going to do about it now.
