White Culture and Black Women’s Law
A group of women from the small West Australian township of Balgo, are bringing their traditional women’s lore to the east, running Kapululangu Women’s Law and Culture workshops in Brisbane, the Glasshouse Mountains and Lismore, and helping an old friend to launch a new book in the process. Dr Zohl De’Ishtar has been working with the women of Balgo since 1993. Her experiences inspired a book called Holding Yawulyu: White Culture and Black Women’s Law. For two of the Balgo senior women, and a granddaughter, they have made the trip to help launch the book, but have enjoyed the exciting chance to share Tjukupuh (lore) with Murri, Goori, Koori and non-Indigenous women through paint-up, dancing and discussion about ceremonies.
