Somali pirates are continuing to plague the busy shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. In the latest incident, three pirates were killed by US Navy snipers during the rescue of American sea Captain, Richard Philips. Lawlessness and political instability in Somalia have allowed piracy to grow over the past decade while poverty in the region and the unprofitability of fishing have made it a preferable career choice.
