What is at the heart of the protests in Turkey?

Anti-government protests have continued across Turkey for a fourth day. Marred by an intense police response which has left one man dead, the protests were initially sparked over government plans to build a shopping mall in Genzi Park in Istanbul.

But, there has also been a growing sense of disquiet about new laws clamping down on alcohol sales, public signs of intimacy and abortion, which have grated on the patients of those proud of Turkey’s strong, secular history. Tulin Daloglu, a columnist for Middle East news service Al-Monitor, spoke with The Wire about what is fueling the growing discontent with those in power.
