Western Sydney is one of Australia’s most diverse and populous regions, home to over 1.6 million people, including refugee and migrant communities from over 72 nations and Australia’s largest population of Indigenous communities. However, the region has been conspicuously absent from Australian literature and its institutions – until now. Over the last couple of years, stories from and about Western Sydney have begun to capture the imagination of readers and critics in Australia. Emergent writers from the West are now being recognised for their work, which doesn’t shy away from many of the difficult social problems and realities in the region, but also celebrates its diverse cultural life.
