West Papuans have slammed the announcement that Indonesia and Australia are to strengthen security cooperation in the wake of the Jakarta bombings. Independence activists renewed their calls for Australia to cut all ties with the Indonesian military, amid fresh evidence of human rights abuses. They now fear that they’ll be lumped together with the terrorists responsible for last Friday’s attack to justify further repression of their liberation movement. West Papuans have been seeking independence from Indonesia for forty years.
