West Papua discussions harmful to Australian-Indonesian relationship

Human Rights groups are calling for Kevin Rudd to raise talks on the situation in West Papua as the Indonesian President arrived in Australia today. Since occupying West Papua in 1969 under the ‘Act of Free Choice’ Indonesia have claimed the region as part of their country. But according to a Lowy Institute report released yesterday less focus on negative issues, such as West Papua, is needed to create a more fruitful relationship with Indonesia.
