Welfare groups criticise animal testing guidelines

An estimated five million mice, monkeys, pigs and other animals are used in lab experiments and testing every year in Australia. In an effort to reduce the suffering of animals in research, The National Health and Medical Research Council has just released a new set of guidelines for ethical practice. It’s been 10 years since the rules were last updated and several critics say the new proposals don’t go far enough to ensure decent animal welfare. The lobby group Animals Australia say the guidelines will do little to change the current system.
