Weld Valley
In the past week, 16 activists have been arrested in the Weld Valley in Tasmania, whilst trying to stop the building of a logging road into the area. Protesters from the Huon Valley Environment Centre remain concerned that while the upper half of the Weld Valley has been protected, world-heritage value forest remains at risk of wood chipping with the building of the new road. To stop media and protesters from getting into the site, Forestry Tasmania has declared an exclusion zone, which means anyone found in the area can be arrested. There is also concern amongst protestors that several of those arrested have ended up spending time inside jail on remand. Jenny Weber with the Huon Valley Environment Centre spoke to The Wire.
