For gay and lesbian Sydney-siders, not to mention thousands of out-of-towners, it’s the party of the year. This year, Mardi Gras parade-goers brought out the usual quantities of glitter and hot pants, but many also brought along a message – whether it was calls for equality or demands for same-sex marriage to be legalised. One group of young people, marching under the banner of student-run advocacy group Wear it Purple, saw the night as an opportunity to speak up about the discrimination many queer young people still face.
