A new multi-billion dollar gas pipeline project set to link the gas field’s of Papua New Guinea to Northern Queensland is in jeopardy. The PNG government has threatened to stop the project, because of unrest surrounding claims Australian weapons have been smuggled into PNG. Adjunct Associate Professor Philip Alpers from the University of Sydney conducted a study in the strife-torn country last year, examining the movement of weapons in the country. The Wire’s Ben Kelly asked Professor Alpers whether weapons really are being smuggled into the country.
