The current squabbles over who should be managing the water in the River Murray are nothing new, according to historian Daniel Connell. He’s written a book called Water Politics which takes a long view of the River Murray and the conflicts it’s caused over the past 100 years or so. He says the current attempt to work out how to best manage the Murray will be the third such attempt since the early 1900s, and we should hope that this time the new arrangements will actually work because the challenges now faced are dire.
