A very personal debate about the War in Iraq is currently being waging in the US, because of a decision by First Lt Ehren Watada to refuse to serve in the warAn army investigator has handed down a report recommending that Lt Watada be court marshaled on three counts for: refusing to deploy to Iraq, conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentlemen; and contempt towards officials, a charge not levelled since 1964. While his legal team is waiting the response from Lt Watada’s commanding officer at Fort Louis, it is expect that the court martial will proceed, leaving the LT facing the very real prospect of serving up to seven and a half years behind bars if found guilty. This report begins with comments from Ehren Watada’s lawyer, Eric Seitz. He told The Wire that despite the US army investigator maintaining that Ehren’s objections to the War were politically motivated and therefore irrelevant, his client has some good precedents to turn to.
