Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have heard the furore today over comments by Liberal MP Trish Worth, who compared asylum seekers to cats and dogs needing quarantine upon arrival in Australia. She made the comments at a forum organised by Justice for Refugees, South Australia. They invited candidates from the major parties vying for the federal seat of Adelaide to discuss their policies on refugees and asylum seekers, and to answer questions from the community. Dr Don McMaster, Chairperson of Justice for Refugees, South Australia, says the comments were disappointing especially considering Trish Worth’s compassion towards refugees. However he also said that they are indicative of the Howard government’s policies on asylum seekers.
