WA court case paves the way for land rights

The Western Australian Supreme Court overturned a Government committee’s decision to remove protection from a Port Headland Aboriginal sacred site. It was ruled that the Aboriginal Cultural Materials Committee did not apply the proper definition of a sacred site. Lawyer on the case, Greg McIntyre, who represented Mabo in 1992 native title dispute, says the it paves the way for Traditional Owners to contest the Committee’s previous decisions regarding other sites.
