Voting Outside the Box Part 4
Since we have to do our duty this Saturday (or earlier if you’re postal voting), it’s time to round off our four-part series. Today we take a look at how well our homegrown system stacks up against the US and Canada. We won’t be comparing the calibre of pollies – that’s a universal problem – but we can check out the actual electoral mechanism, as well as details like party funding. Will Farrell spoke to Dr Brett Hindes, Project Manager with the Democratic Audit of Australia at the Australian National University, and Dr Rodney Smith, from the discipline of Government and International Relations with the University of Sydney. They say that although the Australian system isn’t full-proof, we have anough protective measures to avoid a scenario like the Florida debacle in the last US election.
