The Federal Government spends more than 20 million dollars each year on anti-smoking ads, but according to anti-smoking clinic director Trudy Ward the ads don’t work because they scare people. She claims the money would be better spent on a logical and positive approach that convinces people that the reasons they smoke are not correct. Professor David Hill of the Cancer Council says such methods only work for people who actually want to give up – the rest of the smoking population need to be confronted with the scare tactics.
