Update on the Kyoto Protocol conference
Last night we spoke to Dr Clive Hamilton about Australia’s role, or lack of one at the UN Confernece on Climate Change. The conference is happening over the next two weeks in Montreal, Canada and involves representatives of 190 countries and over 10, 000 people. It’s is a celebration of the Kyoto Protocol which came into effect this year. The protocol is designed to limit worldwide greenhouse gas emissions and developed countries like Germany have played a leading role in promoting and implementing its benefits. However, the Montreal conference also has a serious side with countries beginning to negotiate what their new emissions targets will be after 2012. I spoke to Jennifer Morgan, Director of the Global Climate Change Program with World Wide Fund for Nature who is attending the conference. She began by talking about what individual countries had reported to her on the impact of Kyoto so far.
