America has been accused of human rights violations in the pacific. Representatives from Guam say that the military presence on the island is undermining basic human rights and impedes their drive to self determination. The US maintains a military presence in the Asia Pacific as part of a protective strategy in the region with plans to increase troop numbers in 2014. But the indigenous Chamoru population in Guam say that this will have devastating impact on a people already suffering from being colonially oppressed.
