In its report released yesterday UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) harshly criticises the living conditions of asylum seekers at detention centres in Nauru and PNG’s Manus Island. UN inspectors visited both processing centres in October. They found harsh conditions that don’t meet international standards. The UNHCR report also finds failure to process refugee claims in a fair and efficient way and mandatory detention being in breach of international law. UNHCR calls on Australia not to transfer children, particularly those who are unaccompanied until the conditions in the centres have been considerably improved.
