The Federal Government today confirmed that it would reintroduce industrial legislation into the Senate with the expectation now that it will be able to make the changes it couldn’t before. Laws protecting workers from unfair dismissal will no longer apply to small businesses with less than twenty employees. Secretary of the SA Trades and Labor Council says the federal legislation is the beginning of more moves by the federal government to remove state jurisdiction over industrial relations. The new workplace relations legislation is based on the findings of a Melbourne Institute study which showed that the unfair dismissal laws cost jobs. Study author Don Harding, senior lecturer in Economics at the University of Melbourne said the laws tended to make business too choosy about who they hired and caused equity problems.
