The world’s attention is now fixed on Western Sudan but elsewhere in the country one of the world’s most brutal civil wars has been raging for twenty years. Western commentators like to explain Sudan’s conflicts using racial and religious explanations, i.e. Muslim/Arab north versus Christian/African south. But as Marianna Ngor form the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Movement explained to Jay Lamey, the situation is not that simple. He says the government of Sudan is an absolute dictatorship who deliberately exacerbates racial and religous differences to keep control of the country.
