The United Nations Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination, has issued a strongly worded decision urging the United States to “freeze”, “desist” and “stop” actions being taken which harm Western Shoshone People’s interests or rights. Shoshone spokeswoman Carrie Dann says they took the matter to the United Nations because after two decades of court actions to protect their traditional lands, they had no more legal recourse in the US. Attorney with the Western Shoshone Julie Fishel says CERD has told the US Government to initiate a dialogue with the Shoshone. Inuit Human Rights Advisor Dalee Sambo Dorough says while the CERD ruling gives heart to the Western Shoshone, the UN has no power to force the United States government into action.
