Japan has been told to halt Antarctic whaling by the International Court of Justice. The verdict came down last night and will mean that Japan’s annual slaughter of whales in the southern ocean will be put on hold. The UN court found that Japan had been cloaking commercial whaling under the guise of scientific research. A worldwide ban on commercial whaling was introduced in 1986. Despite this, Norway, Iceland and Japan continue to ignore the international moratorium.
