The US Congress passed the ‘American Clean Energy and Security bill’ by seven votes on Friday – requiring a 20 percent cut of carbon emissions by 2020, compared to 2005 levels. This target may appear high compared to Australia’s current five percent target for 2020, but still falls short of the recommendations of climate scientists. But, the legislation has ended the world’s waiting game. US action is on the table for the Copenhagen Climate Summit, and just how significant may that prove to be?
