TUNE FM’s survival under threat
Australia’s longest continuous running community radio station is fighting to survive as a long-running battle for control has erupted in Armidale. Tune FM, the community-run station based at Armidale’s University of New England, has been the scene of dispute over the last year as staff and volunteers claim that the Liberal-dominated student association has been hampering their freedom to broadcast. Just last week the station’s two staff members were made redundant. While Tune FM staff and volunteers claim foul play, the student association claims the station is out of touch with students needs. Firstly, former TUNE FM administrative assistant Andrew Devenish-Meares and then Lachlan Ashley, Convenor of Friends of Tune FM, spoke to the Wire about the situation.
