Truckies to strike over lack of rest

Truckers claim the 70% of them won’t be driving on Monday. The issue is new regulations which force them to keep a work diary. Driver Leo Fardell says it discriminates against less literate drivers who are fined and get demerit points for even misspelling words. Bernard Belacic is CEO of NatRoad which represents truck owners. He doesn’t agree with the strike but says red tape is a real issue for drivers and even greater is the lack of rest places on the nation’s highways, without which truckies can’t legally stop as they are required to. He says his organisation will be lobbying state transport ministers when they meet this Friday.
