Traffic lights for food labels
With the obesity levels continuing to rise, Health and Consumer groups are taking on the food industry over nutrition information labelling. The current system has been criticised as confusing, with labels stating a percentage of daily intake, for particular food content, like fat, protein and carbs. A new system has been suggested, incorporating the colour coding of traffic lights, to use on the front of food packaging. Red, amber or green stickers will indicate which foods are highest in saturated fats, sugar and salt. Some critics, including food producers, have slammed the traffic light method saying the plan is simplistic and will mislead consumers.
