The Immigration Minister, Chris Evans, has today unveiled proposed reforms to the controversial 457 visa scheme. The program has come under fire in recent years, with allegations that it’s a source of cheap labour for employers. With accusations by migrant workers of unpaid work, unfair termination, workplace injuries and death, today’s discussion paper suggests tough regulations on those employing migrant workers. These include a 10 year prison sentence and fines of over $100,000 for those caught ‘fudging the books’ or mistreating workers.
