Tough new bikie laws considered for NSW
The New South Wales government is considering introducing tough anti-bikie legislation that will give police the power to declare certain bikie gangs prohibited criminal groups. The announcement comes in the wake of yesterday’s brawl at Sydney airport which left one gang-member dead. Similar laws are already on the books in South Australia where they’ve been the subject of much debate. The South Australian premier Mike Rann, who likens bikies to terrorists, insists that the laws have been working. But critics say it is too soon to tell and they worry that the legislation has seriously undermined civil liberties in the state. They caution the NSW government against rushing to adopt South Australian-style laws in response to the upswing in bikie violence.
