The Abbott government has appointed a prominent businessman to head up a federal commission of audit. Tony Shepherd is the president of the Business Council of Australia. He will be leading the commission to investigate where taxpayer’s dollars are being spent.

The government says that commission will have a broad scope to examine the relationship between the state and federal levels of government. But Critics say that the commission is just a piece of political theatre that will allow the Coalition to make unpopular cuts.
