Tongan inquiry damns government over ferry disaster

In Tonga today there are calls for the king to sack the current government. The Royal Commission into last year’s ferry disaster has released its findings – and they are damning. The ferry that went down with the loss of 74 lives was not only an extremely unseaworthy rustbucket, but the top government officials bought it knowing that it was. Most of those who drowned in the tragedy were women and children. Ofa Guttenbeil is supervisor of a Womens and Childrens crisis center in Tonga. She says the report comes at a good time as Tonga moves towards fully democratic elections in November, and that those responsible must resign and face charges.
