Timber towers up to seven stories high could be a way to make cities more sustainable, according to researchers at UniSa’s Zero waste Research Centre. Such buildings would be less carbon intensive and would be a lightweight way of creating urban infill and re-populating city centres. The centre is working closely with industry and government to create modular building products in timber. European cities have been building such timber towers for the past decade and a demonstration model is planned for Australia.
