Tightening and loosening restrictions in the Kimberley

In 2007, alcohol restrictions were introduced into the indigenous communities of Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley. Thanks to these restrictions, there has been a decrease in alcohol-related violence in these towns. However, Western Australian MP Carol Ann Martin has called for the removal of these restrictions, angering the women of these communities and bewildering research experts. Professor Alan Cass, Senior Director at the George Institute for International Health, works in the Indigenous Health area with a focus on chronic diseases in Indigenous communities, and says that there is strong evidence to support why the restrictions should not be removed.
